It has been shown that an excellent a predictor of a child’s success in school is parental interest and support in learning and I enjoy the opportunity to speak with you – the children’s learning is one of my favourite subjects!
If you have not yet visited our classroom, please let me know if you can come by on the following alternate night: Monday, December 5th between 3:45 and 5:00. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can make it or not by e-mailing me at lbutterfield@bsls.ca. We look forward to your visit!

CHRISTMAS HAMPER and GIFTS
BSLS engages in an enormous Christmas Cheer Board campaign with Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, and our Kindergarten class generally collects items for one each year.

Since I am blessed each year with lovely sentiments from students, I would like to make a special request of you this year, if it would not be presumptuous. Regarding “teacher” Christmas gifts, I would like to ask that your child instead either
a) bring double of the items they have drawn from our hamper list OR
b) bring a gently used, no longer required winter coat (of ANY size from infant to adult) or warm new mittens
and place the “extra items” in a plastic grocery bag marked “To Mrs. Butterfield” so that we might put together an additional collection for those in need and a donation to the Koats for Kids campaign.

Of course, I ALWAYS love to receive cards, letters, and pictures from the children, and hope that Christmas might be a chance for them to share their burgeoning printing and artistic skills!

Advent: Christmas is Comingf

Dear Families:

We have been enjoying our hands on learning about primary colours, secondary colours, and shades as we continue to learn letter sounds, words, and families this month.

Be sure to mark December 21st at 6:30 p.m. on your calendar for the Christmas Concert at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church 1541 St. Mary's Road. The Kindergartners will be reciting a short poem.

Field Trip Note
Thank you to the parents who indicated their ability to drive on our first field trip to the Fire Station on Wednesday. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD’S BOOSTER SEAT IS LEFT AT SCHOOL THAT DAY unless it is already in place in your vehicle and you are one of the drivers.

Parent drivers will be given a slip of paper outlining who will be riding with you (if there is someone in addition to your own child), a map with the route to the station, and we will proceed from the school at 1 p.m. Please ensure the children in your group walk together with you on the sidewalks, using crosswalks if crossing the street is necessary.

Once we arrive at the station, we will follow direction from the Fire Fighters, who are experienced with school visits.

The main responsibility of the adults in our group will be to take responsibility for a small group of students to gather should the firefighters get sent out on a call during our visit. It was exciting for the students - the calm, organization and efficiency of the firefighters assisted tremendously in keeping the children calm and following the instructions quickly and quietly!)

We will have future opportunities for those whose schedules did not match up this time. It has been lovely to see the community of Kindergarten learners taking shape as the children get to know one another and the expectations of learning and play at school.

Our Locker Monitors this week worked very diligently to help their classmates with packing and unpacking backpacks, and through the year we will continue to go through the “packing to go home steps” with the whole class.

BOOKWORM BAGS
Thanks so much for reminding your children to return them to school each day. They do occasionally go missing, or your child may set it down on their way out and have it inadvertently picked up by a classmate and they will inevitably be returned the next school day.
If I miss an item for the office that you have sent in a bookworm bag, please be assured that I will accept any and all responsibility for its timely turn in to the office. We may occasionally have student needs at each recess that prevent me from checking bookworm bags as thoroughly as I would like, though I endeavor to do so daily, as I know you do at home. It tends to become easier to do this as the Kindergarten year goes on.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER, CONCERT & VOLUNTEERING
We were fortunate to have Mrs. Isaak in the Kindergarten classroom again this past Monday. She is an experienced and kind substitute, who indicated that the Fred Penner Concert was a lot of fun for the children. I apologize that in my absence I was unable to coordinate for advance collection of cupcake orders, or contact the parents that are willing to do classroom volunteering. We are all eager to have you volunteer in our classroom!

RICE KRISPIES
We “read”/ followed our first recipe to make “Rice Krispie Pumpkins” as a cooperative effort this week. Plan a costume that can reasonably be put on with (relative) independence in your child’s classroom with their classmates.
2. No scary, gory, bloody or violent-themed costumes allowed (this includes no weapons as accessories).
3. Masks are not to be worn at school unless they can be shifted to be worn on top of the head (like a hat) at all times (you might consider face paint as an acceptable alternative, keeping in mind Rule #2).
A costume parade will be held in the early afternoon, and a student dance will be supervised by the teachers in the gym, with group dances led by Mr. Wozney. In Kindergarten, I will provide Rice Krispie treats, and we will play some “Pumpkin Games”.
WE WILL ALSO BE DECORATING PUMPKINS IN THE MORNING IN KINDERGARTEN!

OCTOBER BEGINNINGS IN K

The children have begun to take on their “class jobs” with a partner each week, rotating through different responsibilities in the classroom. The students have been particularly excellent at clean-up after “Choice” (free play/art/reading/writing). We will continue to go through the “packing to go home steps” with the whole class, as I know many parents are making stops back up to the lockers for articles at the end of the day. This organizational skill sometimes comes very naturally to some students, but is very commonly developed over years of practice. This may require much patience, though, as the children have been learning so many different at-school procedures over the month of September, and different families have different priorities for the articles that are important. While water bottles may be left for a day or two and carried around by the children, I do remind them to take them home at pack up time at the end of each day so that they might be washed and returned.

Cammy, the guinea pig, has returned to stay at school, and our weekly “Zookeepers” will have the task of feeding, watering, and cleaning her cage. As a class, we have discussed the needs of living things, particularly animals.

The students worked cooperatively to create the large tree on the bulletin board in our classroom, and we will continue to study trees through the coming month. They will be coming home with a bag in the days ahead, and are being asked to return with 10 leaves for several math (patterning and graphing) and art projects.

The children will also soon be bringing home their “Chime In” folders, which will contain a poen, chant or song that they may have sung in class. There will generally be a “Home-School Connection” instruction on the bottom of the page, asking that you read through the Chime In with your child and return it on Fridays.

Have an amazing week!

IMPORTANT DATES
October 5th – Lunch Lady Orders due
October 10th – Thanksgiving – No School
October 11th – Photo Orders or Retake Orders due
October 17th – Lunch Lady (for those who ordered)
October 19th – School Picture Retakes
October 20th – Kindergarten Family Fun Night
October 21st – SAG (Provincial Professional Development for Teachers) – No School
October 24th – Fred Penner Concert

KINDERGARTEN UPDATES

INTRAMURAL FORMS
A form was sent home from the office asking written permission from parents in order for your child to participate in the lunch gym time that Kindergarteners can participate during one lunch recess every second week. If you would like to know any more about the kinds of activities in which the children will engage, please contact our Phys. Ed. Teacher, Mr. Wozney, who is happy to provide more information.

GINGERBREAD HUNT
The children eagerly participated in the hunt for the Gingerbread Man, and we will continue to revisit this theme at various points through the school year. Several children requested copies of the recipe, which was enclosed in your child’s bookworm bag on Friday afternoon.

FIRE SAFETY
We had our first Fire Safety lesson, and practiced being “Fire Safety Experts” with our first (Kindergarten-only) walk-though of how to exit the school in case of fire, and the children gave excellent scenarios and solutions for exiting through alternate routes as well. A handout was sent home with your child to facilitate your discussion with them about exit plans and meeting places, and to minimize any anxiety he/she might have around the discussion of fire safety.

KINDERGARTEN SCHEDULE
We have been gradually moving to integrate our Kindergarten schedule of learning, play, music, phys. ed., snacks, and lunch to match that of the other classes in the school. One of the most important times for us is beginning our day together, and I am very appreciative that you have been bringing your child to school early enough to allow our morning routine to run smoothly. If you need to speak with me, I am happy to schedule a meeting, or have impromptu discussions anytime after I walk the Kindergarteners to After School Care and ensure those being picked up are with their parents.

If you notice that your child’s eating patterns aren’t back to “normal” in the coming weeks, please let me know and we can discuss strategies to assist him/her in developing the comfort/independence/focus/decision making/environmental changes necessary to assist them in this growth. Discussion about healthy eating, rest, and sleep habits are a natural inclusion of the Kindergarten curriculum, and usually benefit dramatically from discussions at home about taking care of our bodies by taking the time to give them the nutrition and fluid they need, listening to the body’s cues for using the toilet, and using our time at school with all our Kindergarten friends wisely to ensure we have enough energy to work and pay together!

The Kindergarteners have already made incredible progress in knowing their morning routine. Thank you for encouraging them to bring their lunch kit and bookworm bag into the classroom independently, and most of the children really enjoy showing parents how to do things in Kindergarten.

TERRY FOX WALK
On September 28th all of the students will go for a walk through the neighbourhood as part of the annual Terry Fox Walk, and we will be reading stories, watching a video, and finding out a bit more about this fundraiser to assist those affected by cancer. All children at BSLS were given “Tasks for Terry”, and the Kindergarteners traced their own hand on the task sheet so that they can do small kind, helpful things for you or others in their family, and ask that a coin be given to the child to tape to their sheet. Participation in this campaign is totally optional, and if you would like to emphasize the deeds each child can do to help others, then the name of the task the child did can be written on the fingers and thumb of their hand tracing, to be shared when they bring it back to school.

Hat Day is an additional fundraiser for those with cancer. Children are asked to bring a toonie on that day, and can wear any hat they wish to school and keep it on all day to bring attention to the campaign. If your child does not have a hat, please let me know, and I’m happy to ensure that all of the Kindergarteners can participate on that day. We also ask that your child wear their new school golf shirt on the day of the Terry Fox Walk.

IMPORTANT DATES
September 26th – P.I.P. Meeting – all welcome
September 28th – Terry Fox Walk and Hat Day (wear your new school shirt!)
September 30th – School Picture Day
October 10 – Thanksgiving – No School
October 19th – School Picture Retakes (please notify the company if you need to have one via the form your child will bring home after the first picture day)
October 21 – SAG (Provincial Professional Development for Teachers) – No School
October 24th – Fred Penner Concert

Thanks for your incredible support already of your child’s learning and success at school!

May God bless you and your family,
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield

Starting Kindergarten

Dear Kindergarten Families,
Our year began warmly, with much excitement, a few butterflies, and an introduction to our classroom and one another last week. Getting to know one another and have fun while learning the expectations and routines of the Kindergarten classroom will continue to be our main goals for the week ahead.
When your child enters our classroom, I thank you for ensuring that they are wearing their indoor running shoes, and bring in their lunch box and bookworm bag (if they do not yet have a notebook placed inside it, I will have these added at school this week). Children who attend Before School Care are assisted in their morning organization by the staff from that program. PLEASE CHECK AND RETURN THE BOOKWORM BAG EACH DAY. There is additional information on our Kindergarten learning in the e-mail and hard copy newsletters sent home that may not be included on our blog page for reasons of privacy.

I look forward to a wonderful year ahead!

GRACES
We have learned two class graces thus far, and your children may delight in sharing them with you at mealtimes. The first, “Come Lord Jesus,” we call “The Shark Prayer”, as it is begun with “fins up” (hands on top of our heads like a dorsal fin) and begins slowly then picks up speed throughout. It ends with a clasping of hands from a wide open position to a quick clamp together like the jaws of a shark.

Come Lord Jesus, be our guest
And let these gifts to us be blessed
Aaaaaaaaaand (drawn out for dramatic effect)
Come Lord Jesus, be our guest
And let these gifts to us be blessed AMEN!
_________________________________________
Our second grace is done “with a country twang” and is thus far eliciting a tremendous response from the class:

Thank the brown cow for the chocolate milk
Thank the pig in the barn for the bacon on the grill
Thank the egg for the chicken and the chicken for the egg
Thank the Lord for daily bread.
Amen.
YEEHAW!

*******************************************************************************
Please check the Principal’s Update for these and additional dates and schoolwide information each week!
I can be reached via e-mail at lbutterfield@bsls.ca or by leaving a phone message at 984-9600 x.5 so that I can call you at the end of the school day.

IMPORTANT DATES
September 12th – First Lunch Lady order due
September 19th – First Lunch Lady Lunch for those who ordered (if you need additional forms please just send me an e-mail – the lunches are delivered to the classroom just before noon on this day)
September 30th – School Picture Day
October 19th – School Picture Retakes (please notify the company if you need to have one via the form your child will bring home after the first picture day)
October 24th – Fred Penner Concert (please note the date change)

May God bless you and your family,
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield

JUNE EVENTS

Dear Parents:
Our last “hot lunch” of the year was today, and this week’s highlights are the special events and dates for the finish of school. Since several exciting things are happening next Wednesday, please see the principal's update to ensure that all families receive the information for Evening of the Arts and Jump Rope for Heart.

Thank you to parents who have already returned Field Trip forms for our trip to Fort Whyte Alive. Please return all forms on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. If you require a drivers authorization form, please let me know via e-mail so that we can ensure the paperwork is taken care of for you by Wednesday, May 25th. If you have not driven the Kindergarten class before or if you have renewed your licence or registration since the last trip, a new copy of those documents is necessary in the office also. Thank you to Mrs. Madden for always coordinating this paperwork for events in the midst of her very busy work days!

The children had a substitute teacher for 3/4 of the day yesterday - Mrs. Sands was in our classroom from morning recess until the end of the day.

Evening of the Arts begins at 6:30. PLEASE BRING YOUR CHILD TO THE K CLASSROOM at 6:20 p.m. After the students sing their two songs, I will take the children to the side of the playground so that we can quickly, quietly and in an organized fashion have each Kindergartener picked up by a parent to enjoy the rest of the evening at your lawn chair/blanket spot.

Those children who are participating in Jump Rope for Heart have been asked to return their envelopes to Mrs. Bemister next Wednesday, May 25th.

Our new class pet, a guinea pig, will be delivered to our class next Wednesday, May 25th!

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Since I can not be reached by the school telephone number until next week, please feel free to e-mail me. I can be reached by e-mail today, and again on Tuesday, May 24th.

Warm wishes,
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield
Kindergarten Teacher

Beautiful Savior Lutheran School
Kindergarten - Gr. 8, Before and After School Care, Daycare, Nursery School:
52 Birchdale Ave. Winnipeg, MB R2H 1R9

Nursery Campus:
1541B St.Mary's Road Winnipeg, MB R2M 3V8

www.bsls.ca

Phone: 204.984.9600
Fax: 204.984.9607

May News in Kindergarten

Dear Kindergarten Families:

To follow please find a copy of Mrs. McCrea's update, which includes important schoolwide dates for the month of May.

Thank you for the excellent preparation for your children's outdoor clothing and footwear during these past few weeks of tumultuous weather changes.

In Kindergarten we finished our first group run-through of paper-making using recycled paper, and will continue to experiment with different types of paper and both electric and manual blenders. The children are very excited to try to make our own recycled paper train tracks in the science centre.

THANK YOU FOR THE MILK JUGS - our construction looked excellent, but you may have heard that it had a collapse on one side at some point on Saturday, so we continue to work on problem solving for a sturdier structure. The children have accepted this "experimentation" vs. "failure" approach very optimistically, which I hope will continue with them through their school years ahead!

The children each designed a paper product (party hat) last Friday as an introduction to independence in "the design process" as outlined in the science curriculum. Most children were enthusiastic about taking their paper hats home, while others were stuffed unceremoniously into backpacks. Regardless of the state they reached home in, the process of printing and drawing the design, and their discussions with one another regarding structure, durability and the qualities of a great looking party hat were a wonder to behold that afternoon in the classroom. Also related to that theme, we have been working in groups to experiment with the best paper mache recipe to make a pinata, and several of the children shared their pinata construction (and destruction :) stories from home.

If you have a washable spoon and fork that could be designated for your child's lunch each day (when needed), that would be appreciated. We have used over 500 plastic spoons and 50 forks so far this year, and while I still have several hundred spoons, we'll try to save them for those rare occasions when the ones from home are forgotten (it happens to all of us!).

In math this week we reviewed our shapes by making bubble blowers of a variety of shapes, then tested some of them on Wednesday to see what would happen to the shape of the bubble based on the shape of the blower. We will do the same with three dimensional shapes. In math next week we will be doing graphing of a random event (raining cats and dogs!), and more combinations of numbers as parts of a whole.

If you have any questions or concerns, I welcome your e-mail/call/after school visit anytime. Thank you for your incredible support of your child's learning. The children's enthusiasm for learning is clearly supported at home, which is one of the biggest predictors of their future school success!

Warm wishes,
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield
Kindergarten Teacher

Getting Ready for Music in Grade One

Dear Kindergarten families:

I know some families were asking excellent questions about how to procure a violin for your child for Grade One, so I wanted to pass along the following information. It was sent to Admissions by a supplier (from whom you can order through their toll free phone number, as well as ask any relevant questions). Some students purchase or lease locally at QuestMusique or Spirited Music. If you would like to find out if there are families who have gently used violins to sell, or would like to know more about what your child needs, Mr. Badiuk, the violin instructor, can be contacted at violin@bsls.ca, or you may leave a phone message for him with the office at 984-9600 x.5. He teaches the children daily at BSLS, as well as offering private, after school and lunch hour violin, guitar and mandolin lessons. If you lease/buy from a local supplier, they will provide you with the size recommendation for your child's first violin for school. If you decide to order from Kessler violins (information below) or buy second hand, Mr. B. can also assist you in determining the size of violin your child will require.

In addition to visiting the band class, Mr. B. has visited the children in Kindergarten during our Star of the Week program, and we will have an opportunity to see the violin students prior to the end of Kindergarten so that the children currently in Kindergarten will more confidently be able to transition into their music class in Grade One.

"Music washes away from the soul
the dust of everyday life."
~ Berthold Auerbach (1812-1882) ~

Warmest wishes,
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield

***********************************************************************

KESSLER VIOLINS
Here is a bit of info about the violins and some pictures:
High grade violin outfits, fitted with ebony pegs, including case, rosin bow and with adjustable tailpiece. Our culminating projects for our study of paper will be papier mache, a paper design project, and paper-making. Thank you for the wonderful paper samples sent to school with the children, which are on display on our science centre table.

RESURRECTION EGGS
I hope your child has had the opportunity to share The Easter Story with you through the eggs that they assembled prior to Good Friday. We enclosed the story as a reminder for future years, but the children did a wonderful job of telling the story to their Grade 5/6 Reading Buddies last Wednesday. If you are interested in the accompanying bible verses for each egg, I am happy to send home a copy that includes it for your future reference. Children are also invited to decorate their egg cartons at home for many years of storytelling!

SPRING IN FOR SPRING TEAThe Spring Tea will be held this coming weekend - many details have been sent home from the school office (particularly in the principal's update), and our Kindergarten families were asked to contribute muffins for the bake sale (but baking any of your favourite nut-free favourites is welcome and encouraged by PIP - the funds raised are directed to our school's playground project, which will undergo construction during the summer months). This is a lovely little community event wherein the children from Grades 3 - 7 serve dessert and tea/coffee to families from our school (and any friends you have brought with you) and the children and adults have a quaint craft sale - conveniently timed just a few weeks prior to Mother's Day.

MISSING ITEMS - Oh dear! The playground is much drier, and the glorious warm weather has changed the nature of play on the playground from puddle-jumping to spring sports and games. We have looked in likely (and less-likely) locations at school, for the extra socks and related items that children brought to school to be prepared for a few wet recesses. If your child happened to bring home a pair of socks or pants that were not theirs, please accept our plea to return them to school so that we can replenish our stocks for the next rainy days (sure to come again this spring). Please also take a moment to check in the Lost and Found bins in the hallway on the way to the Chapel area to claim any items your family is missing. Also, as the weather becomes warmer, please send a hat in your child's backpack for sun/heat protection, as well as a water bottle in their lunches to ensure plenty of oppportunity for hydration throughout their busy days.

Thanks again for you incredible support of your child's Kindergarten learning,
Mrs. Butterfield

Paper, Paper, Paper

We have begun our study of Paper in Kindergarten, which will involve a continuation of design, building on our partner-created boats for teddy bears in the month of March. The children brought home a piece of "Elephant Poo-Poo" Paper, and are asked to bring a unique paper product from home for our continued study.

We had a classroom visit from Pastor Schnarr, who answered some of our questions about the "remembering" of Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas, and read a picture book about the story of Noah and the first rainbow.

Thank you again to Kindergarten parents whose consistency in the home reading with their children is demonstrated in the children's confidence and growth in putting together sounds in words, and advancing their vocabulary and storytelling. We have returned to our Reader's Theatre story sharing, which we will then advance to story sharing with the entire class over the next few months.

Thank you, also, for sending extra socks (several pairs), underwear, pants, and a shirt in your child's backpack. Our learning, and play on the playground, is sometimes messy, and the children are most comfortable having their own things to change. If you happen to have any of the spare clothing (pants, socks, t-shirts, mittens, hat) from my collection in the classroom, please send it back clean a day or two after your child has borrowed it.

Have a wonderful (WARM!) week,
Mrs. Butterfield

A BEARY GOOD START

As part of our new unit on bears, we have shared several nature stories and continued our learning about trees. The Kindergarteners have also expressed great enthusiasm for information about the jungle, which will lead our learning in the coming weeks.

Over the next several weeks we will work on a bear den from 4L milk jugs. We have made an appeal to children from the entire school to bring in their (well rinsed!) milk jugs to share with us for our project.

Home Reading logs are being filled very quickly and the children are very anxious to exchange their book each day. As each sheet is filled, a sticker will be added to your child’s folder to give them a visual sense of their progress. PLEASE KEEP ALL SHEETS IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER, EVEN AFTER THEY ARE COMPLETE.

Also, PLEASE let me know if this is not a fun, snuggle up and read time for your child. If your child does not want to read at home, or they want you to read a book from your bookshelf instead, feel free to read it to them, talk about something silly in the story that you liked/they liked, then log the book onto the sheet and send the book back to school. If you jot me a note that you have had to make changes to ensure your child’s enjoyment of your reading time, that would be appreciated. We continue to work on reading strategies, letter and combinations of letter-sounds, printing and writing using what we know about sounds.

We also continue to work on numbers in the teens, backward counting, and skip-counting.

THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, MARCH 5th.
REPORT CARDS WILL GO HOME NEXT WEEK, AND PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES WILL RUN IN THE THIRD WEEK OF MARCH. The firefighters gave us a thorough tour: parents had the opportunity to slide down the firepole (only one of four in the city); children all had the opportunity to be lifted onto the pole at the bottom to slide down a little way; we watched the firefighters calmly and quickly leave the hall on a call from the dispatcher; we toured the water safety vehicle and gear (a parent volunteer tried it on!); we saw the firetruck and gear (thanks to the parents who volunteered me to try it on – it was great for the children to have a chance to hear a voice through the oxygen mask so that it will not be frightening for them if they encounter it in real life; the firefighters talked to us about safety procedures we had practised at school; we were given fire safety booklets to copy for the whole class (your child should have received theirs on Monday); we saw their workout area – it was a very full hour!

Fall Weather
THANK YOU to the parents who have had the opportunity to label mittens, hats, and other clothing.

Fubuki Daiko
The concert held last week at the school as a kick-off to the Artists in the Schools program at BSLS will be the first exposure the children had week to Taiko Drumming. We will be learning hands-on drumming in our three Kindergarten sessions with the group.

As a class, we have also been practising Japanese greeting “O-hayoo gozaimasu” (Good-morning – this is spoken at all times of the day) and “Doomo arigatoo gozaimasu” (a thank you that is said at the end of our session to the sensai). We also practised bowing upon entering and exiting the room, which will be expected as we enter the drumming area. I had the opportunity to be part of the staff session, and enjoyed the learning opportunity as much as the children enjoyed theirs. Overall, the feedback from their instructors was that they were attentive, respectful learners. Well done!

News This Week

The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin
I hope your children had the opportunity to "teach" you about how a pumpkin grows with their "mysterious orange plate project". The children showed tremendous enthusiasm for this Science/Art/Language activity. Thank you to the parents who helped us put the finishing touches on our project on Wednesday and had the opportunity to witness the "Busyness" and focussed attention of the children, even at the end of a long school day.

No School
There is no school on Friday, October 22nd. On this day teachers from all over Manitoba will be attending SAG (Special Area Group) training and information sessions.

Fall Supper
We do look forward to seeing you at the Annual BSLS Fall Supper and Auction on Saturday, October 24th. This is an important fundraiser put on by the parent association (PIP), but is also a wonderful family evening of dinner, with a craft-bag for the kids, and opportunity to connect with other families.

Our First Field Trip of the Year
Our class has an opportunity to visit a Winnipeg Fire Hall as a culminating activity for our Fire Safety stories, talks, and activities. If you are able to drive for this event, please contact the office or me (lbutterfield@bsls.ca) to request the necessary forms to transport other children in your vehicle. Please complete these forms by Tuesday, to ensure that we are all set for our trip. The K class has been very responsive to the behavioral expectations in different settings, but it would be wonderful if you could talk to them about the safety aspect of staying with their group and asking the firefighters before touching items in the fire hall. Also, thanks for sending your child's car/booster seat to school that day so that they can travel safely to and from the fire hall.

Volunteers
We love having parents to volunteer in our classroom. Now that our classroom routines are more established and the children have made strides in developing connections with their classmates and teacher, I hope to maximize on your time in the classroom. There are many daily "maintenance" jobs (paint, art supply preparation, filing, materials prep, etc.) in a Kindergarten room that run much more smoothly with eager volunteers, and I am excited for this to begin in the last weeks of October.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin on a Vine...
You may have noticed our schoolwide "pumpkin patch", which is a tradition at BSLS. Each child will be carving a pumpkin (our Reading Buddies from Grades 5 & 6 give us important one-on-one help with this activity!) and will have the opportunity to take them home.

We will be celebrating "Pumpkin Day" at school on Friday afternoon, complete with a costume parade, group dance in the gym (the children have been learning dances in Phys. Ed. with Mrs. Bemister that the whole school will do together that afternoon), and treats provided by parents. If you are one of the families who will be providing that treat, you will have received a reminder e-mail from me at the end of this week. If you are still uncertain, feel free to chat or e-mail me with any questions.

Regarding costumes: I have been asked to pass on a school policy that there be no scary costumes, no masks, and no weapons with costumes at school. This is a highly anticipated event for the children, and having a costume at school inspires a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Thank you to the parent-helper for that afternoon at school.

Fall Weather
After a delightful warm stretch of weather, the temperatures have been cooling off considerably, and warm jackets and mittens have begun their arrival to school (THANK YOU!). Since the tracking of mittens, hats, and other clothing is a very time-consuming activity in Kindergarten, I need to thank you in advance for labelling all your child's items. Some parents use specially-designed labels, but many have also found permanent markers on labels to be a very effective method.

It is a season of Thanksgiving, and our upcoming week of celebration certainly seems to reflect that. Thank you for all of your support for our school activities and Kindergarten work. Have a wonderful week!

"Falling" into Kindergarten

Our classroom routines are established, our first class reward party (complete with popcorn, an "All About Me" movie, God Made Me Special, and face paint)has been concluded and we're working our way toward another, and we have many exciting learning opportunities ahead.

Our reading buddies have been a highlight of each week, with students from grades 5 & 6 sharing their time and attention for one-on-one reading on "Wacky Wednesdays".

Some scheduling notes for parents:

Mondays are generally our "journal entry" days, when your child will have a chance to share their activities from the weekend, or special things that they are thinking about.

"Wacky Wednesdays" have a few events not held at other times during the week:

*Chapel service in the a.m. (we will be sharing a song at the last service in October)
*Reading Buddies after lunch
*Chime In folders returned in bookworm bags (if they are in a child's bag prior to Wed., I will leave them there to allow your child repeated opportunities to do their singing/reading activity at home)
*Library book exchange(if your child is ready to return their book prior to Wednesday, and it assists your family in ensuring that library books are returned in time, we have a Library Book Bin in our classroom to which books can be returned any day in preparation for the exchange on Wed.)

Fridays
A new "Chime In" will be sent home MOST Fridays.

I look forward to our continued social, academic, and personal progress in Kindergarten.

KINDERGARTEN END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES

LITTLE BOOKS
Our last “home reading” book exchanges will happen next Wednesday. Thanks!
FIELD TRIP
Our field trip to the Winnipeg Firehall on DesMeurons has been confirmed. This concludes our Star of the Week presentations, and I am very appreciative of the time and effort required by your families in order to bring in the many items and have special visitors in our class. Your children were so delighted and have continued to talk about having family visitors in the classroom.
PAPER SCIENCE
Our last science unit on paper will be culminating in making our own paper from recycled office scraps later this month. We will be waiting for a sunny day, since it is fun to do it as a messy outdoor activity. Laundry alert: They may be dirty, but all the materials will be washable!
LIBRARY BOOKS
This week will be our last borrowing of books from the school library. We will return them next week and a reminder note will be sent if there are any other outstanding books on your child’s list. Thank you for being so conscientious in your return of the library books. It has made a tremendous difference in reducing the number of lost books this year. Your child has the next three weeks to bring home any outstanding library books. If you do not receive a reminder notice from me in your child’s bookworm bag, and you are uncertain as to your child’s latest borrowing history, please jot me an e-mail and I can let you know if your child has any books outstanding.
READING BUDDIES
Regular one-on-one reading with the Grade 5 & 6 students has been a big highlight time of the week for the Kindergarten students. They have read to us, and they were an excellent support in preparing the K students to share a book with their “Reader’s Theatre “ groups earlier this year. We will be preparing a little secret gift for each of our reading buddies to present to them during the last week of school.
HOME READING
While I know the spring sports schedule gets very busy, families have been working to make time to snuggle up and read books that the children are beginning to decode on their own, as well as your own bedtime story routines. This is excellent! We will continue to do so until the last Thursday of school (June 24th). The little books provide a fun and quick read with your child (rather than expecting a particular level of accomplishment in reading). If your child is eager to read to you, then that is excellent. If they are willing to make “educated guesses” about what comes next (even silly ones), then this is an important skill for strong readers. Or, if he/she is excited to talk about rhyming, letters, words, sounds, or the story that the pictures tell, then that, too is encouraged as a part of the fun of sharing reading.

Frogs - Speckled and Wide Mouth

Star of the Week
Thank-you to E.’s Dad for coming to extend our learning – he made a presentation on Chinese characters to the rapt attention of the Kindergarteners on Friday afternoon. Her special Mystery “guest” showed up today, and we look forward to a visit from her special family guest on Friday afternoon.

Special Guests
In addition to our special family guests, we thoroughly enjoyed our special guitar music sing-a-long with Pastor Peter Lurvey. If your child was singing “Pharoah, Pharoah, oooh, baby, let my people go” to the tune of a song you many have recognized from your past, then that is one special gift from his time with us. We look forward to sharing some of these songs with you at Evening of the Arts at the end of May and K Graduation at the end of June.

We are also very appreciative of Mrs. Carol Seburn visiting our class this week to help us learn about how children who are blind learn the alphabet. In your child’s bookworm bag was a copy of the braille alphabet that the children had an opportunity to see produced on the Brailler in our classroom. She also presented the classroom with a braille copy of each child’s name, and left a 3-D enlarged sample of braille alphabet cards for our writing centre.

Home Reading
Home reading folders have been kept at school this week. Some of the children have been asked “when they can have them back” and I am delighted by their enthusiasm. Enjoyment of reading is one of the biggest predictors of school success for children, so I congratulate you on your home reading commitment and making it a positive, fun experience with your child at home. In your Chime In folder, your child has a sheet on which they are asked to print your current home phone number and the 911 emergency number.

Kindergarten Intramurals
Beginning today, and continuing through the month of May on Wednesdays, all children who wish to participate in Jump Rope Club are welcome to do so in the gym during the lunch hour recess. Children who attend all four meetings of the club are eligible to participate in a jump rope presentation at the Evening of the Arts later this month. This is an excellent start for those students who have chosen to be involved in the Jump Rope for Heart program. If you have any questions about the packages that were sent home with your child on Monday, Mrs. Paul welcomes your call/e-mail (bpaul@bsls.ca).
DATES OF NOTE:
May 3rd The children sang in unison at 12 p.m. CDT in our outdoor sharing of “Sing Sing” on Music Monday.
May 21st No school – P.D. Day
May 26th Evening of the Arts – a presentation of music sung by our class, and played by the violins and band, as well as a presentation from the Jump Rope Club.

STAR OF THE WEEK
Thank-you to G. and her family for some surprises in the Mystery Bag, jellybean guessing jar, and family stories entwined with the adventures of Wazo and Zazo! This week’s star is F., and we look forward to a visit from her special family guest on Friday afternoon. Attached in your child's "Bookworm Bag" for the future Stars are copies of the Star of the Week outline and questionnaire. Just a reminder: we are proceeding in “reverse alphabetical order”.

WELCOME BACK to our friends who were either on vacation or off due to illness.

Earth Day
Thank you, students, for cleaning up the school ground (senior grades cleaned in the surrounding neighbourhood) as one of our activities to mark Earth Day.

___________________________________
To follow is a copy of a newsletter from the Love and Logic Institute, which I receive on a weekly basis. If you would like to read more, they can be found at www.loveandlogic.com:

Easing Separation Anxiety
Dear Lorianne,

I am often asked, "How do I help my child feel less anxious about going to daycare, preschool or the babysitter?" If you have kids, the odds are pretty high that you've pondered this question and wondered what to do. Listed below are some quick tips:
Remember that kids take their emotional cues from the adults around them.
The calmer and more business-like we act, the easier it'll be for our kids.
Avoid doing too much reassuring.
Strangely, the more we talk with our little ones about how much fun they are going to have, the more anxiety they seem to have. It's as if they reason, "If my parents have to tell me this is going to be okay, maybe it won't."
Make the transition short and sweet.
The quicker you move, the faster your child will calm down once you leave.
Don't look back.
Although it's hard to resist the urge to go back and comfort your child, he or she will calm down far quicker if you keep going and don't look back.

While all children are different, some separation anxiety is normal and healthy. Generally speaking, the tots who feel the most secure when they are with their parents are the ones who feel the most secure when they are away from their parents. A large part of providing this security involves combining big doses of love with good, solid limits. Our first version utilized materials found in the classroom, and we will be planning others that will involve materials brought to school. The den has already been a favourite spot for the children to read a book or do a puzzle with a Kindergarten friend.

One of the dens we will be building over the next several weeks will be made from 4L milk jugs. We will be making an appeal to children from the entire school to bring in their (well rinsed!) milk jugs to share with us for our project.

Home Reading logs are being filled very quickly and the children are very anxious to exchange their book each day. As each sheet is filled, a sticker will be added to your child’s folder to give them a visual sense of their progress. PLEASE let me know if this is not a fun, snuggle up and read time for your child. I am working on reading strategies during my mini-conferences with the students at school.

BEACH PARTY
This Friday, your child may bring “summer wear” (no bathing suits, please!) to Kindergarten. Some ideas: a “sun hat” or any hat that is not a toque (!) will do just fine, sunglasses, sandals/flip flops, shorts. If it is very cold outside we will wear shorts over our pants, just in case there is some emergency for which we must go outdoors. However, if the weather continues as warm as it has been thus far this week, we will wear our shorts indoors, put on snowpants for recesses, and change back to pants at the end of the day!

Some of the activities we are planning include:

Beach party invitations
The children very much wanted to invite their parents to the party, so if you would like to join us for the last class to have treats with us, that would be fantastic. If your work schedule precludes you from attending, we have prepared the children for the idea that they can take home a treat for you instead!

Inflatable boat filled with water for some indoor splashing fun (and a lesson on less, more, and conservation).

A dance party to some beach music by Jake Chenier and reggae artists who perform children’s music.

Party food – While I had planned on bringing the treats, the children were very excited at the prospect of bringing something, too. Please do not feel that you need to do special shopping or baking, but if you have some beach party snacks that your child would like to share, they are welcome to bring it to class.

STAR OF THE WEEK
Thank you to S. and her Mom for: sharing interesting facts about you, fun illustrations of the time Wazo and Zazo spent with you, puppy figure estimating, photos, playing a puppy guessing game, and giving a presentation on dog bite prevention. Inside you should have found:
1) A small class book that your child can exchange each school day for a new one. If you would like to keep it for an extra day, please indicate so by writing a note in the pizza slice on the Reading Log sheet.
2) A Reading Log sheet with pizza slices on it. If you need more sent home, please jot a note in your child’s communication log in his/her bookworm bag and I can slip more in to go home with them.
“If, instead of a gem, or even a flower, we could cast a lovely thought into the heart of a friend, that would be giving as the angels give”.

I LOVE TO READ WEEK
Next week’s activities have been previously outlined in the weekly principal’s update, but please find expanded information for parents of our Kindergarten children in the “School Dates of Note” on the right. Throughout the week, teachers will rotate through different classes to read at 3:00 p.m. each day, and thus the Kindergarten children will have a chance to interact with a few of their future teachers. If you would like to read to our class, but just didn’t get a chance to let me know last week, we still have room for readers first thing in the morning, beginning our day right after O Canada and our morning prayers to share one of your favorite stories with us. Again, just let me know as early as possible this week to ensure that no one goes away disappointed – the more readers, the better!

CHIME IN
We will be working on extended activities of our Chime In poems for another week, and those will come home this Friday. Your child will have two poems/little book activities in their Chime In folder to bring home to share with you and return next week.

SCHOOL DATES OF NOTE:
Feb. 22nd – 26th I Love to Read Week (activities were outlined in the Principal’s weekly update via e-mail)
Monday—Wacky Word Day – children may wear shirts with words on, but the children in Kindergarten will also be practicing our writing of words we know by adding fabric strips of words to our shirts. Wacky hairdos are also welcome.
Tuesday—Olympic Sports Day - children may wear jerseys, red and white or printed “Canada” clothing (hats/toques are allowed, too). In our class writing centre this week will be an opportunity to make banners and flags to cheer on our Canadian athletes.
Wednesday—Pyjama Day & Buddy Reading Day – a note for Kindergarten children: you are welcome to bring your favourite teddy bear (please add a small, even if non-permanent, nametag to your child’s bear. One of our themes for March is “Bears”, so we’ll have our Teddy Bear’s picnic a little early to coincide with this school-wide event).
Thursday—Riddle Day—bring in a riddle to be shared
Friday—Dress as your favourite Storybook Character
At 6:30 p.m. PIP will be holding their Family Literacy Night – fun literacy games, fellowship with your fellow BSLS families, and a portable bookstore by Usborne Books & The Light Christian Store will be part of the evening.

Do you have any concerns about your child in particular, or our Kindergarten program in general? Please call me at the school, and I would be happy to meet with you after 3:30 on M,T,W,or F, or after Choir on Thursdays at 4:45.
~Thank you for all of your support!
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

We love because He first loved us. ~1 John 4:19

REACHING OUT
The energy level was very high last week and the student-initiated projects (Bake Sale, Gluten-free Taco lunch, Hats for Haiti) to raise money for the people of Haiti has been inspirational throughout the school. We ask that you print about their adventures at your house (real or fictional) in their journal, which will also come home with them. Feel free to include shopping receipts, movie stubs, menus, and/or any other memories from the activities he did or the places that she may have traveled with you. Please return them on Monday. You will also receive a short questionnaire for you and your child to complete together. This will be displayed in the classroom (along with five photos of themselves or favorite people/pets). The questionnaire will be copied for a class memory book, and returned after the end of your child's week. Monday Your child will share Wazo and Zazo’s adventures with the class. This is also the day that you send back the questionnaire and 5 photos for display. Also, if you have something special for Friday (see below) please send a note to school with your child so I can plan for it. Your child will share the poster with the class. The class will then have an opportunity to ask questions and interview the "Super Star".

Wednesday
Mystery Bag! Please help your child come up with a favorite object and bring it to school in a brown grocery bag or lunch bag. We ask that you help your child come up with three clues to describe the object and attach them to the outside of the bag. Your child will share the clues, one by one, and see if their classmates can guess what's in the bag. Friday Counting/Estimating Jar! Please send a collection of small objects (blocks, pennies, individually wrapped candies, etc.) in a clear zippered bag for the counting/estimating jar. The children will estimate how many objects there are, and then record the actual amount in class. The collection can be from 5-50 items depending upon size.

Friday
Your child will have an opportunity to bring a special guest (mom, dad, grandparent, etc.). The guest can choose to share with the class: a family cultural tradition, a science experiment, a cooking activity, an arts and crafts activity, read a favorite book, bring something from their current/former career, etc. Please send a note on Monday to let me know what you have planned or to let me know that you are unable to attend and I will plan something in its place. For scheduling convenience, the guest may share just before lunch (11:00 – 12:00) or during the last half hour of the school day (2:45 – 3:15), but we welcome them to stay with your child for the full half day if they are interested in doing so – just let me know in your note so we can ensure as much hands-on participation as possible for our guests!

This will be an exciting week and a very BUSY week for you and your child. I appreciate your extra effort and assistance in making your child a "Super Star"! Please let me know if you have any questions. Little by little, books open a whole world to children!

Research shows that reading books aloud is the single most valuble support parents can provide in helping children learn to read (Priscilla Lynch, Ph.D., NYU) and I hope you might take some of the reading suggestions from our blog to add to your home-reading experience. Long after children have mastered independent reading, you and your child can enjoy special time together by reading to them aloud. Reading aloud to your child develops their vocabulary, increases their understanding of language through contextual cues, and sends them the message that you value reading as a lifelong skill that is not just limited to their schooldays.

I welcome your visit at the end of the school day (or feel free to sign up to be part of our Kindergarten volunteer schedule, if this is something you would enjoy), or send an e-mail or phone call if you have any questions in general about the Kindergarten curriculum and philosophy in general, or your child in particular. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year.

Piggy Bank Fun

Our paper mache piggy project has been an excellent opportunity to look at the design process, and have required tremendous patience in waiting for each step of the process to be complete!
Our next field trip is to the Manitoba Museum.

Spring Tea and Craft Sale

The children's beautiful spring scene watercolors (painted on linen paper from France with special squirrel bristle brushes under the expert guidance of Mrs. Carol Harms, retired elementary school principal and resident of Thailand) were on display for this wonderful event, which is a tradition at BSLS. Also coming home with the children will be their three-dimensional ladybug crafts, which accompanied an energetic reading of The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. This was enthusiastically received by the children after our mini-book making of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children will be examining more of this author's work, as we also study our final Science Unit about Paper. We kicked off the unit with an introduction to "Elephant Poo-poo Paper" from the Calgary Zoo, and a discussion of the fibres in linen, cotton, and wood-based papers.

Spring Things

WELCOME
A warm Kindergarten welcome to E, who joined our class last week. Thank you to all the students who did such a tremendous job of making her feel welcome to our class.
Also welcome to the warm weather, and to the spring coats, rubber boots and splash pants that have replaced skipants, toques, mittens, scarves, parkas, boots...
EASTER
Last week’s Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Monday, and Good Friday and Easter stories and activities on Wednesday made for a very busy week. In contrast to the start of the year, when the students found the days very long, they all concurred that the days seem to be racing by while at school! An alert for the egg carton Easter stories that went home on Friday: there is a nail in one of the eggs that I hope will remain safely stowed there after the children share their stories with you! The children's enthusiasm for this project was catching!
SPRING
This month’s learning theme continues with our string of seasonal activities, with seeds, bugs, and growing things adding the spice to our math, science, music, art, social studies and language arts activities. Attached you will find an information sheet and questionnaire about our “Star of the Week” activities in the coming months. Due to long weekends and holidays, this stretches our schedule out for many months, so please reassure your child that during this time we will continue to have a time each week when the children share with one another of personal news, adventures, plans, and prayers, but I do ask that items from home be saved until their “Mystery Bag” turn during their Star of the Week activities (see Wednesday, below). Please let me know as soon as possible if the following schedule conflicts with family plans, and I will be happy to arrange an alternate week for your child.

Friday before your child's week begins
You will receive Wazo and Zazo, our class mascots, who will spend the weekend with you.

Monday
Your child will share Wazo and Zazo’s adventures with the class.

Friday
Counting/Estimating Jar! Please send a collection of small objects (blocks, pennies, individually wrapped candies, etc.) in a clear zippered bag for the counting/estimating jar. The children will estimate how many objects there are, and then record the actual amount in class. The collection can be from 5-50 items depending upon size.

Thanks again!!

**************************************************
WARM VALENTINE GREETINGS:

Leading into the long weekend for our Monday, February 16th holiday, we have a few items of note:

Our Valentine's Day Party on Friday will be filled with painting (a special keepsake valentine for Mom & Dad), games, candy estimation, science, french (la famille), Valentine poetry and songs, and of course, our valentine exchange and treats. Our Superstar of the Week is bringing his Mom in as a special guest. She will share with us a beautiful story about Ethiopia, and share the Ethiopian alphabet, treats, and information about some of the food, housing, and people there.

Next week we are celebrating I Love to Read Week at BSLS! As part of the festivities, we will be carrying a book with us during the day, and when the principal rings the bell, we are to stop in our tracks (even in the hallway, technology lab, etc.) and read! Also, Wednesday (18th) is PAJAMA AND BEDTIME STORY DAY, so please send a favorite bedtime book (with your name inside the front cover, if possible) along with your child. On Friday we are to dress as our favourite Storybook Character, then we'll have FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT in the evening from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the school. The Parents In Partnership are sponsoring an evening of Literacy-based games in each classroom, food, and a Book Fair!

*******************************************************************************************************************
Is your family struggling with the Roll It Tic Tac Toe game that was sent home? Perhaps your child has already taught you how to play. Just in case, though, here's how it works:

1. Each player chooses a color (marker, pencil crayon, etc.).
2. Youngest player goes first (sorry, Moms and Dads, but that's the rule!) and rolls both dice. On the playing card, the player who rolled colors in the square of the number (total) that he/she rolled. If you roll a 7, it is "wild" and you may colour any uncoloured number on the game board. If you roll a 2, you miss your turn.
The Object of the Game: to get as many "3 in a row" lines as possible when the game board is full. The player with the most "3 in a row" lines is the winner.
The "Real" Objectives of the Game: a) fun for your child b) fun with your child c) number recognition of groupings of objects and of numerals d) beginning addition (without the terminology) e) turn-taking and sportsmanship f) strategic logic!

HAVE A TERRIFIC WEEKEND!

God bless,
Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield
*********************************************
Beautiful Savior Lutheran School

KINDERGARTEN HOMEWORK

To keep in mind regarding Kindergarten “Homework”:
It should be:
F—frequent
U– upbeat
N-never too long!
“Homework” needn’t be equated with “seatwork”. Christian was presented with his Birthday Bag book from the class, and we celebrated a day of Teddy Bears (Where’s My Teddy was a book favorite!) and “C” words in Language Arts & Art. We performed our first song with the Kindergarten T class at the chapel service, singing a song from Africa that your child may wish to sing for you! We also watched the DVD animated story of David & Goliath, which our class read in a different children’s version earlier this week. Thank you for your careful return of your child’s library books for our weekly trip to borrow books! We ended the day with some delicious birthday treats!
COLOR DAY & TERRY FOX WALK
Since we started our day with our class color designated as yellow, we created headbands for the dramatizion of “Five Little Ducks”, which you can ask your child to share with you when they bring their little duck home this week.
We had our class’ first fire drill of the year, though some students had done one before in their Tues./Thurs. class. Our KB class did a remarkable job of following the safety instructions. Well done!
The gorgeous fall weather was delightful for our Terry Fox walk through the picturesque Norwood Flats area, and the Freezies on the playground after were met with great enthusiasm!
CHIMING IN
Chime In folders will go home on Monday of this week. Please return them on Friday as usual. THANKS!!

Do You Have Any of the Following to Spare? For future projects we are still collecting:
· Bread clips
· Egg cartons (clear [from organic eggs] or cardboard)
· Large coffee cans
· Toilet paper rolls
Thank you for helping us to Reduce-Reuse-Recycle!

Also, the school collects labels for the Campbell’s Labels for Education program—the collection bin is in the school library. We appreciate your donations!

NUMBERS ABOUT ME
This week the students concluded their Numbers About Me sharing, learning a bit more about one another and getting comfortable in presenting information to their classmates.

MY HOUSE
Your child created a small model of their house for their “family” to be stored in. Many are anxious to take them home, though we will have them on display at school for some drama and language arts activities over the coming week.

CHIME IN FOLDERS
A new poem will be placed in this folder on most Fridays. Please keep all of the poems together in the folder, and your child will soon have a collection of poems, chants and songs that they will hopefully be excited to recite. You will notice that patterning and/or picture cues will be used a great deal. The goal is to have fun and feel a sense of mastery in the beginning stages of reading.

FIELD TRIP FUN
Both Kindergarten classes will depart on Wednesday (after the class presentations at chapel) for our field trip to the Corn Maze (about 10 min. south of S. Perimeter Hwy.), which will kick off some of our upcoming class activities, including some study of trees and changes of the seasons. Departure from the school is at 9:45 a.m. and our planned departure from the Corn Maze is 1:30 p.m. Thank you to all the volunteer drivers. We look forward to your participation in our field trips this year!

SPiRIT WEEK FUN
Each day of the week brings some new adventure to school, which our class will participate in on Monday and Friday:

Monday - Backwards Day

Wednesday - We will not participate in Pajama Day at this time due to our Field Trip, but will have our own class Pajama Party at a later date!

Friday - Color Day - Our class has been designated to wear Yellow! We'll also participate in the Terry Fox Walk with the whole school, raising awareness and funds for those with cancer. A "Tasks for Terry" handout will be brought home with your child, on which they are asked to note specials tasks that they do as acts to help others, with an optional donation to the Terry Fox Foundation as part of this service work.

Welcome to Kindergarten

It has been an exciting couple of days, with many “firsts”, and settling in to the Kindergarten Room(s). We have attended the first chapel service of the year (on the first day of school for many of us!) and the children were exemplary in beginning with a service such as this.

We read some stories about the first days of Kindergarten, and one to remind us that our parents love us dearly when we’re at home and school and play.

We also read The Gingerbread Man and followed his clues around the school, and Mrs. Butterfield used a school map to find where his clues led us next. We each had a gingerbread cookie to decorate and eat (or take home).

We also have our first “homework” which was sent home with a brown paper bag decorated by your child.

SOME DATES TO REMEMBER:
Student & Class Photos
Wednesday, Sept. 10th
This month's Scholastic Book Orders
due Friday, Sept. 12th
Parents in Partnership General Meeting & Love & Logic Parenting Workshop
Wed., Sept. 17th 7 p.m.
Schoolwide Terry Fox Walk
(Please let me know if you are interested in joining us!)
Friday, Sept. 26th at 2 p.m.

OUR COMMANDMENTS FOR THIS WEEK:

You shall have no other gods.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

Watch for more updates on this blog site each week. If you have any questions about the Kindergarten curriculum, philosophy, or your child in particular, your e-mail or call to Mrs.
Butterfield is always welcome.
